Fil-Ams win in several San Francisco Bay Area local elections

SAN FRANCISCO—As of press time, 20 Filipino Americans have won seats in the last November 4 local elections in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Incumbent Assembly Member Rob Bonta (District 18) won re-election to the state legislative body. He is still the lone Filipino American in the State Legislature.

West Sacramento Mayor Christopher Cabaldon and Milpitas Mayor Jose Esteves won re-election. Mayor of Suisun City Pete Sanchez was unopposed.

FilAm Vote logoHercules Mayor Myrna de Vera won a City Council seat.  Former Colma Mayor and Vice Mayor Joanne Del Rosario was re-elected to the Council.

Gabriel Quinto won one of two open seats to the El Cerrito City Council.

Daly City Council incumbents Ray Buenaventura and Mike Guingona easily won re-election. Pat Gacoscos won a Council seat in Union City.

Garry Barbadillo, Milpitas planning commissioner, won one of two open seats in the City Council.

In San Francisco, Hydra Mendoza won one of three seats on the Board of Education race.

Rosie Tejada and Katherine Zarate Dulany won seats in the Jefferson Union High School District Board (Daly City, Pacifica, Brisbane, Colma and Broadmoor).

Tony Ubalde won in the Vallejo City Unified School District race. Neolani Sallings won in the Santa Clara Unified School District TA2 race.

Thelma Boac, won a Berryessa Union School District seat. Lionel J. Tingin won a seat in the Brisbane School District Governing Board.

Rosalinda Canlas won one of two seats in the New Haven Unified School District Governing Board.

Mae Cendana Torlakson won in the Ambrose Recreation and District Directors election in Contra Costa County. She is married to Tom Torlakson, who won the California School Superintendent race.

Current Commissioner Robert Bernardo narrowly lost his seat to James “Jim” Tucker. Rene Pineda lost his bid for the State Assembly.
