Customs alerted on entry of contaminated Japanese frozen products – Palace

MANILA, Philippines – The Bureau of Customs (BOC) was alerted on the possible entry of Japanese frozen products said to be contaminated with pesticide, a Malacañang official said Sunday.

Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. added that the products from the Maruha Nichiro Holdings were not registered with the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA).

“(I)nalerto na po ng Department of Health at ng Food and Drug Administration natin ang … Bureau of Customs na bantayan po at tutukan na hindi po makapasok ang mga produktong ’yan sa ating mga daungan bilang proteksyon po sa kalusugan ng ating mga mamamayan,” Coloma said in an interview over DZRB.

More than 300 people in Japan were reported fell ill after eating the frozen food products of the Japanese firm, which has since recalled over 6.4 million of its contaminated food packages in the country’s latest food poisoning scandal, according to an Associated Press report.
