Brillantes eyes ambassadorship in Eastern Europe

MANILA, Philippines鈥擟ommission on Elections (Comelec) chairman聽Sixto聽Brillantes聽Jr. is considering to ask President Benigno Aquino for a diplomatic post in Eastern Europe should he resign from the聽poll body.

He said this after Aquino reportedly said Friday that he would ask聽Brillantes聽to not step down.

鈥淗e doesn鈥檛 need to appeal to me, it is my decision,鈥 Brillantes said. 鈥淚 know what I will do.鈥

鈥淏ut thank you [for asking],鈥 he added.

Brillantes聽previously stated that he is thinking about resigning after the Comelec suffered a series of legal setbacks at the Supreme Court (SC), the latest being the Temporary Restraining Order on the airtime limit rule.

He said that he felt like it was the high tribunal that was already running the elections instead of them.

Brillantes聽said he would likely make an announcement on his final decision on Monday next week.

鈥淚 will wait first to see the president, I鈥檓 planning to ask him if he can give me an ambassadorship, so I could rest because it is very tiring in the聽Comelec,鈥 he said.

鈥淭hat is really what I was asking for when he won the 2010 elections, I was asking for ambassadorship, until [then聽Comelec聽chairman Jose]聽Melo聽resigned,鈥 he added.

Brillantes聽has been working as chairman of the聽Comelec聽since January 16, 2011 serving the unexpired term of Jose聽Melo.

When asked why he would want to be an ambassador he simply said: 鈥淧ahinga (Rest).鈥

Brillantes聽said he would want to be assigned in countries in 鈥淓astern Europe like Romania, Slovakia, or Hungary,鈥 where there are few Filipinos
