Gov鈥檛 urged to look into killing of Filipino worker in Iran
DAVAO CITY, Philippines—Aurora Representative Juan Edgardo Angara urged the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) to investigate the death of an overseas Filipino worker on Kish Island in Iran last month.
The Filipino, Johanna Lamo, was killed and her body dumped on the seashore.
Paul Cabrera, the victim’s fiancé, had asked Angara to help in transporting her remains from Manila to Tagum City in Davao del Norte where she will be interred.
Angara, in a statement sent to the Inquirer, said Cabrera claimed no police report was filed with the Iranian authorities despite the allegations of foul play.
“I call on the DFA and OWWA to act with urgency and get to the bottom of this matter,” Angara said.
“Such things seem to be happening all too often to our overseas workers. It’s only right that government ensures their security and safety wherever they are in the world,” he added.
Article continues after this advertisementLamo had said she left for Iran in order to work and save up for her marriage to Cabrera.
Lamo’s body was scheduled to be transported to the Philippines Thursday evening. Angara said his office will help facilitate the transport of her remains to Tagum City.
