MANILA, Philippines鈥擲enator Edgardo Angara called on the government to hasten the improvement of the country鈥檚 transport system following the recognition of Boracay as the world鈥檚 top island-destination for tourist by an international travel magazine.

鈥淭his is yet another cue for us to quickly rehabilitate our international airports and island-to-island transportation system,鈥 Angara said.

鈥淲e must focus on making our travelers feel safe and comfortable while touring the country.鈥

Boracay was recently named as the world鈥檚 top island destination and bested out Bali, Indonesia and Maui Hawaii, in an online survey answered by subscribers of popular US-based Travel and Leisure magazine.

鈥淭his proves that the Philippines has a chance in the global tourism scene鈥攖his survey shows that more and more people from different parts of the world are discovering the beauty and wonder of our country,鈥 said Angara.

He noted the recent publicity for Boracay Island would also, in turn, give much attention to other local destinations hence the necessity of better public transportation.

鈥淥ur country has so much to offer in terms of tourism: from breath-taking beaches and natural wonders to historical sites preserving important chapters in the story of the Philippines. We must seize this opportunity to show the world the uniquely Filipino experience,鈥 the veteran legislator said.

He added the renewed interest on Boracay would help boost local cultural and eco-tourism.

鈥淥ur local tourism industry is also gradually growing. Hopefully, more Filipinos develop an interest in discovering our own country before travelling abroad.鈥
