MANILA, Philippines—Senator Edgardo Angara called on the government to hasten the improvement of the country’s transport system following the recognition of Boracay as the world’s top island-destination for tourist by an international travel magazine.

“This is yet another cue for us to quickly rehabilitate our international airports and island-to-island transportation system,” Angara said.

Boracay was recently named as the world’s top island destination and bested out Bali, Indonesia and Maui Hawaii, in an online survey answered by subscribers of popular US-based Travel and Leisure magazine.

“This proves that the Philippines has a chance in the global tourism scene—this survey shows that more and more people from different parts of the world are discovering the beauty and wonder of our country,” said Angara.

He noted the recent publicity for Boracay Island would also, in turn, give much attention to other local destinations hence the necessity of better public transportation.

“Our country has so much to offer in terms of tourism: from breath-taking beaches and natural wonders to historical sites preserving important chapters in the story of the Philippines. We must seize this opportunity to show the world the uniquely Filipino experience,” the veteran legislator said.

He added the renewed interest on Boracay would help boost local cultural and eco-tourism.

“Our local tourism industry is also gradually growing. Hopefully, more Filipinos develop an interest in discovering our own country before travelling abroad.”
