MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine Coast Guard said Saturday it apprehended a Taiwanese fishing vessel near the Calayan islands off the northern tip of Luzon for fishing in Philippine waters without the necessary permit. The poaching vessel was manned by a mostly Filipino crew.

The PCG said its vessel, MCS 3007, was  patrolling the waters off the Calayan Islands and Babuyan Islands when it apprehended the Taiwanese fishing boat F/V JVP 1.

“The Taiwanese fishing vessel was… manned by seven (7) Filipinos and two (2) Taiwanese nationals,” the PCG said.

The Coast Guard ship ordered the fishing boat to stop and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources  personnel boarded it to investigate.

The PCG said they discovered that the Taiwanese vessel did not have a commercial fishing vessel license,  which prompted the BFAR boarding team to apprehend the ship and escort it to Port Irene in Sta Ana, Cagayan, for proper disposition and filling of appropriate charges.
