Fil-Canadians hold vigil to raise awareness about domestic violence

The Filipino-Canadian community in Winnipeg held a vigil last Saturday remembering the Filipino victims of a murder-suicide and to raise awareness about domestic violence.

“An issue like domestic violence is hidden,” said Darlyne Bautista of the Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba told CTV.

“To see this many people come out to express their concern and sadness about this issue is very heartwarming.”

On March 24, Julito Nonato fatally stabbed his wife Renelle Bermudez Nonato before taking his own life.

According to the Winnipeg Free Press, Renelle was the third woman allegedly killed by a domestic partner this year in Winnipeg.

It was the seventh homicide in Winnipeg this 2012.

CTV reports that dozens of Filipinos attended the vigil outside the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba. And many victims of domestic violence and immigration advocates spoke at the vigil. Joseph Pimentel/AJPress
