NAM commends Philippine leadership in nuclear disarmament

/ 08:55 PM May 31, 2011

MANILA, Philippines—The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) has commended Ambassador Libran N. Cabactulan, Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the United Nations in New York, for leading the negotiations in the 2010 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) to a successful conclusion.

The NPT Review Conference, where Cabactulan served as its president, was held at the UN headquarters in New York on May 3 to 28 last year. The month-long meeting resulted in a landmark outcome document, called the 64-point Action Plan.

“International peace and security, in particular nuclear disarmament, is the concern of all countries, and it is not just in the province of the developed or the powerful,” said Cabactulan.

“The Philippines accepted the burden of Review Conference president because of the belief that the country has the capacity to lead important and delicate negotiations on a treaty with far-reaching security implications not just for our region, but for the entire world. The commendation given by the NAM confirms this belief,” he said.
