MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) deployed one of its biggest patrol vessels to the Philippine (Benham) Rise on Monday following the reported presence of Chinese research vessels in the area.
PCG spokesperson Rear Admiral Armand Balilo said the BRP Gabriela Silang sailed for a two-week mission in and Batanes.

He also said the 84-meter vessel would patrol the vicinity waters to conduct maritime domain awareness and monitor local fishermen, signaling intensified PCG presence in Northern Luzon.
“We will also check the reported Chinese research vessels in Benham Rise,” Balilo said in a statement Monday.
