EU Parliament human rights subpanel set to visit PH on Feb. 22-24

The European Parliament (EP) subcommittee on human rights will visit the Philippines on February 22 to 24, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Monday.

MANILA, Philippines — The European Parliament (EP) subcommittee on human rights will visit the Philippines on February 22 to 24, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Monday.

The DFA accepted the EP’s request as the latter signified the expanding talks and cooperation between the Philippines and the European Union (EU).

“The Philippines’ relationships with the European Union and its members have steadily expanded across political, economic and security areas. These relationships are founded on mutual interest and shared values of democracy and freedom, rule of law, peace and stability and human rights,” the DFA said in a statement.

The agency added that the EP subpanel’s visit “is taking place in the context of the open and regular engagement between the Philippines and the EU on human rights, and the shared aim to further constructive dialogue and cooperation on human rights.”

Six members of the EP will lead the delegation going to Manila, according to the EU Delegation in the Philippines.

The delegation, the DFA said, will meet with lawmakers in the Senate and House of Representatives to discuss “best practices and legislation.”

The delegation will also pay courtesy calls on Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla Jr. and Trade and Industry Secretary Alfredo Pascual. The visitors will likewise join in a dialogue with executive agencies, the agency said.
