Bongbong Marcos calls for dialogue, diplomacy, maximum restraint amid Taiwan tensions

NEW YORK CITY, United States — Amid the rising tensions in Taiwan, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Friday (Saturday Manila time) urged involved parties to continue dialogue and diplomacy and adhere to peaceful resolution of conflict.

In his speech during a meeting with members of the Asia Society here, Marcos Jr. expressed concern over the rising tensions in the region, urging all concerned parties to exercise maximum restraint.

“We are certainly concerned about rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait, just north of the Philippines. We urge all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint. Dialogue and diplomacy must prevail,” he said.

The President said the Philippines adheres to the One China Policy and has consistently called for the peaceful resolution of the issues involving Taiwan.

He was referring to the acknowledgment of China’s position that only one Chinese government exists.

Tensions in the region have heightened after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan, further straining relations between Washington and Beijing.

Beijing has vowed to seize the island nation one day, by force if necessary.

Amid the tensions, Marcos Jr. vowed to uphold peace, pushing for partnerships with its neighbors.

“We will continue to work toward strengthening the ASEAN, particularly its dialogue partnerships with neighbors that uphold regional peace and security,” he said.
