DFA: No reported Filipino affected by strong earthquake in China's Sichuan province

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Tuesday announced that no Filipino was reported affected by the magnitude 6.8 earthquake that struck China’s Sichuan province.

In a message sent to reporters, DFA spokesperson Ma. Teresita Daza said: “Based on initial info, there are 167 Filipinos in the area. No reported Filipino affected by the earthquake.”

Chinese state media earlier reported that 46 people were killed after the powerful quake rocked Sichuan on Monday. The temblor is said to be the strongest to hit China’s province since 2017.

The quake’s epicenter was located in the town of Luding and a total of 39,000 people were living within 20 kilometers of the epicenter and 1.55 million within 100 kilometers.

Chinese state media likewise reported that some roads and houses near the epicenter were damaged by landslides while communications were down in at least one area.
