PH, Canada discuss possible cooperation in defense, human rights

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines and Canada discussed possible cooperation in various areas, including defense and human rights, on Monday morning.

Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo met with the Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines, Peter MacArthur, at the agency’s office in Pasay City and tackled the two nations’ bilateral ties.

“Had a good conversation w/ Canadian [Ambassador] MacArthur today on potential synergies in the maritime field, defense, food security, human rights, renewable energy & infra [development],” Manalo said on Twitter.

“Canada is a good friend & [important] regional partner [with] the Filipino diaspora binding our partnership & friendship,” he added.

Last year, Canada donated P757 million for seven development projects in the archipelago.

The projects will concentrate on the country’s economic response to the impact of COVID-19, improving women’s health, and assisting vulnerable sectors in Mindanao.
