MANILA, Philippines—Russian Navy vessels, including a warship and two submarines, stopped by in Manila for resupply on Tuesday (Nov. 16).

The contingent is composed of corvette Gremyashchiy (337), diesel-electric submarines Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (B274) and Volkhov (B603), tanker Pechenga, and support ship Alatau, Navy spokesperson Commander Benjo Negranza said.

It was not clear how long the Russian port call in Manila would be.

“The arrival of the Russian contingent in the country and the accommodation and support being extended to them underscores the promotion of peace, stability, and maritime cooperation in the region,” Negranza said.

The vessels are en route from Baltic Fleet to the Pacific Fleet, its new deployment, according to reports. Its last known stop was in Sri Lanka in October.

Manila, under President Rodrigo Duterte, has been warming up to Moscow since 2016 following a foreign policy pivot.
