DFA reports 15 new COVID-19 cases among overseas Filipinos; total now at 8,869

MANILA, Philippines — The number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases among Filipinos abroad has reached 8,869 after the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported 15 new infections on Monday.

Of these cases, DFA figures showed that 2,975 remain under treatment while 618 patients have died, including seven new fatalities recorded in Asia and the Pacific region and the Middle East.

Meanwhile, the DFA has recorded 5,276 recoveries.

“The Middle East remains to be the region with the most number of our overseas Filipinos affected by the COVID-19 pandemic,” it said.

“On the other end of the spectrum, Asia and the Pacific has the least numbers in all categories compared to other geographic regions, except for the total number of recoveries where the Americas ranks lowest with only 410 reported recoveries,” the DFA added.

In the Philippines, health officials have so far confirmed a total of 57,006 COVID-19 cases.

The new coronavirus, which originated from Wuhan City in China’s Hubei province late last year, has so far infected over 12.5 million worldwide. Of the number, nearly 561,000 have died from the disease.
