Consul general: Nearly 60 Filipinos in Singapore test positive for COVID-19

MANILA, Philippines — Nearly 60 Filipinos in Singapore have tested positive for the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the Philippine consul general in Singapore said Wednesday.

“As of last night, ang total ng ating confirmed Pinoy cases would be around 59,” Philippine Consul General in Singapore Adrian Bernie Candolada said in an interview on dzMM.

Of the 59 cases, 27 have already been discharged from hospitals while 32 others are still undergoing treatment.

According to Candolada, there are more than 200,000 Filipinos living and working in Singapore.

He said around half of the Filipino migrant workers in Singapore are household service workers while the rest are skilled and professional workers.

Singapore has extended its “circuit breaker period” aimed at breaking the transmission of the coronavirus to two more weeks which will last until June 1, Candolada said.

“Mas mahigpit ang pagpapatupad ng circuit breaker period,” he said.

“Lahat ng gathering ngayon including religious gathering bawal po,” he added.

Meanwhile, the latest data from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) showed a total of 1,084 overseas Filipinos having contracted COVID-19.

Of this number, 662 Filipino patients are still undergoing treatment while 269 have recovered.

There are 153 fatalities reported so far, the DFA said.
