PH, China oppose UN resolution on abuses vs Rohingya Muslims

MANILA, Philippines — Philippines and China thumbed down the resolution of United Nations Human Rights Council which aims to condemn human rights violations against Rohingya Muslims and other minorities.

Of the 46 member states that voted, Philippines and China voted no on the UN resolution during council’s 42nd General Assembly on Thursday.

Thirty-seven countries voted in favor of the resolution while seven others abstained.

The resolution denounces “all violations and abuses of human rights in Myanmar, including against Rohingya Muslims and other minorities, and expressing deep concern at the reports of ongoing human rights violations.”

The UN resolution also urged Myanmar government to end all violence and violations of international law in Myanmar and ensure protection of human rights of all human rights of Myanmar people including Rohingya Muslims and minorities.

The UN resolution also states the importance of conducting “international, independent, fair and transparent” probe into the gross human rights abuses in Myanmar including “sexual and gender-based violence against women and children, and to hold accountable all those responsible for brutal acts and crimes against all persons, including the Rohingya, in order to deliver justice to victims using all legal instruments and international judicial mechanisms.”
