PNP sends 182 cops to World Police and Fire Games in China

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) will send 182 police athletes to participate in the 2019 World Police and Fire Games (WPFG) in Chengdu, China, which takes place from Aug. 8 to 19.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Brig. Gen. Bernard Banac, PNP spokesperson, said the law enforcers will compete with their counterparts from over 70 other countries in what has been dubbed the Olympics of Law Enforcement Service.

The athletes will compete in 19 sporting events — badminton, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, boxing, women’s volleyball, indoor volleyball, track and field, tennis, table tennis, karatedo, shooting, pocket billiards, decathlon, triathlon, cycling, judo, golf, swimming, and taekwondo.

Lt. Gen. Archie Francisco Gamboa, PNP deputy chief for operations, is designated as head of the delegation.

Gamboa said law enforcement athletes assigned in different units at the PNP Headquarters and Regional Offices will be participating in the WPFG which is held every two years since 1985.

“The exposure to this prestigious event that the PNP can get is a good opportunity to enhance its image and promote rapport among our foreign counterparts not only in the field of law enforcement service but also in sports,” Gamboa said.

The WPFG is stage every two years for all active and retired police and fire officers worldwide.
