KUNMING CITY, China鈥擳o further strengthen its ties聽 with South and Southeast聽 Asian nations,聽 China聽 has聽 opened聽 its door for聽 another area of collaboration,聽 this time, in the sector聽 of education.

In August this year, representatives聽from Yunnan University in China聽are planning to come to the Philippines to conduct an admissions seminar.

The 300-hectare Yunnan University is one of the largest universities in China聽but it also聽wants to be recognized聽as聽a 鈥渞egional first-class鈥� university throughout the world.

Yang Hua, vice president of聽 聽the university鈥檚聽international college, noted that聽 for more than 20 years,聽 the university has been recruiting foreign students.

This year, Hua said, they聽expect to recruit聽800 foreign students.

鈥淲e have a plan to recruit foreign students, and we will go to the Philippines in August to conduct an admissions seminar,鈥澛爏he said.

But聽 for a country聽 where聽 English聽 language聽 is spoken and understood聽 by a few,聽 getting more students from other nations is not an easy task.

So to encourage more foreign students to enroll in the university,聽it has decided to open six English courses鈥� Civil Engineering; Electronic Information Engineering; Computer Science and Technology; Software Engineering, International Economy and Trade;聽and Business Administration.

鈥淭his is to adapt to the development of the University鈥︹�� Li Wei, Dean at Yunnan鈥檚 School of International Education, said聽in聽a recent briefing聽with聽journalists from South and Southeast Asia nations.

Wei said聽 offering聽 English courses is a聽 鈥渘ew move鈥� for the university, which offers 94 bachelors degree, 236 masters degree and 115 doctors degree聽.

鈥淲e offer English courses or English majors for the international聽students so [it would be easier聽 for them聽 to choose a major],鈥� he said.

At present,聽 Wei said about 80聽 percent of the international students of聽 Yunnan University聽 are sponsored by various scholarships, including the Chinese government scholarship, Confucius Institute scholarship, Yunnan Provincial Government scholarship, Yunnan University scholarship, among others.
