EU moves to protect seafarers, including Pinoys
The European Union is moving to tighten the protection of seafarers, including Filipinos, onboard its vessels.
Through its official Facebook page in the Philippines, it was announced that the EU Council approved a directive with its partners in the maritime sector, with the objective of protecting seafarers’ rights in case of abandonment.
The directive provides compensation for contractual claims for death, or long-term disability of seafarers due to occupational injury, illness or hazard, the social media post read.
“In some places seafarers still face abandonment without pay, being left behind for a long time without access to regular food supplies, medical treatment and without any means to return home,” a portion of the post read.
“Thanks to the incorporation of this agreement into EU law, seafarers will be covered by a mandatory financial security system. This will guarantee their subsistence means and a safe return home,” it added.
