Malaysian PM Najib Razak arrives for 30th Asean Summit

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2 to attend the 30th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit in Manila.

The Malaysian government plane carrying the 63-year-old state leader arrived at 5:25 p.m.

He is accompanied by his wife Rosmah Mansor.

Najib was welcomed by Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Jesus Dureza and his daughter Jeliza Farrah Dureza-Uy, Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia Charles Jose and Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) general manager Ed Monreal.

Najib was one of the Asean leaders who arrived early in the Philippines for the four-day summit.

On Wednesday evening, Brunei Darussalam’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah arrived at Naia Terminal 3.

Najib, along with state leaders from the 10-member Asean, will attend the summit President Rodrigo Duterte will chair on Saturday.

Najib will also chair the 10th Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle Summit and attend the 12th Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asian Growth Area Summit, which Duterte will also  chair.

The Malaysian leader is also expected to give keynote address at the Prosperity for All Summit organized by the Asean Business Advisory Council along with Thailand Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

Last November, Najib met with President Duterte when the latter went to Malaysia for a state visit.

There, they discussed issues such as security in the Malacca Straits amid the Abu Sayyaf kidnapping and piracy activities.

When Najib hosted the 27th Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur, he expressed optimism that the Bangsamoro peace process will be completed before President Aquino steps down from office in June 2016.

The Duterte administration, meanwhile, expressed its full commitment to all peace talks, including the government’s negotiations with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front which is covered by the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro the Aquino administration initiated.
