Palace mourns death of OFW in Kuwait

Malacañang mourned the death of overseas Filipino worker (OFW) Jakatia Pawa who was executed in Kuwait on Wednesday afternoon.

“It is with sadness that we confirm the execution of Jakatia Pawa this afternoon (Philippine Time),” Presidential spokesperson Ernie Abella said in a statement.

Abella said the government “exerted all efforts” to save Pawa from execution.

“The Philippine government has provided the late Pawa all the assistance necessary to ensure all her legal rights are respected and all legal procedures are followed,” he said.

“Government likewise exerted all efforts to preserve her life, including diplomatic means and appeals for compassion. Execution, however, could no longer be forestalled under Kuwaiti laws,” he added.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Pawa who had been accused of killing her employer’s daughter was executed by hanging on Wednesday afternoon.

“We have exerted different efforts through the embassy and political departments.  “We respect the decision of the justice system of Kuwait,” DFA spokesperson Charles Jose said in a press briefing.

Abella said DFA was “now closely coordinating with Ms. Pawa’s family and continues to facilitate assistance.”
