AFP deploys new batch of peacekeepers to Haiti

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has sent off 125-man United Nations peacekeeping contingent to Haiti on Friday.

Military spokesperson Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla said the all-Army contingent was sent off by AFP chief Gen. Ricardo Visaya, Air Force chief Lt. Gen. Edgardo Fallorina, AFP chief of operations Maj. Gen. Carlito Galvez, AFP Peacekeeping Operations Center commanding officer Col. Eugenio Hernandez at the Villamor Air Base in Pasay City.

The peacekeeping contingent, led by Col. Rosario Pompa and supported by 15 officers and 119 enlisted personnel, will be deployed to Haiti for one year as part of the contributions of the Philippines to the UN.

“To date this is the country’s largest deployment after the Philippines pulled out its contingent in Liberia and Golan Heights,” Padilla said.

This is the 20th deployment by the Philippines. The contingent they will replace will arrive on Monday. IDL
