Prominent Fil-Am politician vying for San Mateo County seat

Daly City Councilor Michael “Mike” Guingona is running for a seat in San Mateo County’s Board of Supervisors.

DALY CITY, California — Filipino American longtime political figure Mike Guingona, who has served as Daly City Mayor, Vice-mayor and council-member, is running for a much-coveted position in San Mateo County’s Board of Supervisors.

This year north San Mateo County residents will pick their own supervisor for the District 5 seat currently held by Adrienne Tissier, who is being termed out.

Four candidates are running as her replacement. Two, including Guingona, 53, are serving on the Daly City Council. The other Daly councilor vying for the seat is David Canepa, 39. The other two candidates are Colma Councilwoman Helen Fisicaro, 63, and Brisbane Councilman Cliff Lentz, 50,

Most of the 58,716 voters in District 5, about 66 percent, reside in Daly City with the rest living in Brisbane, Colma, Broadmoor, parts of South San Francisco and parts of San Bruno.

Guingona is the nephew of the late statesman, and the Philippines former vice-president (under Ramos administration) and senator, Teofisto’Tito’ Guingona, Jr.

Guingona, a lawyer, was born in San Francisco and moved to Daly City at age 3. In 1993 he became he first Filipino American to be elected to the Daly City Council and one of the youngest elected officials in the Bay Area.
