Drunk driver kills Filipino student in Hayward, California

HAYWARD, California – Police on Sunday, July 19 identified Dave Go, 19, a Hayward resident, as the victim of a drunk driver in a collision that occurred at about 2:50 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of Hesperian and Eden Shores boulevards.

Go was a student of California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. According to his friends, he was an active member of a Filipino club and performed modern dance.

Police said Go was a passenger in a car driven by a 20-year-old woman, whose car stopped on northbound Hesperian Blvd. for a red signal. The suspect, Paul Butler, 28, also of Hayward, who was speeding and didn’t see the stopped car, rammed his vehicle into its rear end.

Butler tried to leave the site of the accident but police apprehended him a few blocks away. He is in custody for a felony DUI , felony hit and run and vehicular manslaughter while driving drunk.

Go died in Eden Medical Center where he was brought with major injuries. The female driver was treated for minor injuries and released.

Go’s friends at Cal Poly have started a to raise $10,000 for Go’s family. As of early Monday morning, 75 people had contributed $2,028.
