Abu Sayyaf eyed in Sabah abduction

Members of the Abu Sayyaf are be­lieved to have ab­ducted a cou­ple in Sabah Thurs­day evening and may have brought them to Sulu, se­cu­rity of­fi­cials said.

Se­nior Su­per­in­ten­dent Abra­ham Or­bita, Sulu pro­vin­cial po­lice chief, said his of­fice has re­cieved in­for­ma­tion that the kid­nap vic­tims have ar­rived in the prov­ince, though this has yet to be con­firmed.

“We have un­con­firmed in­for­ma­tion that kid­nap vic­tims from San­dakan have al­ready ar­rived in our AOR (area of re­spon­si­bil­ity),” Or­bita said in a text mes­sage, with­out elab­o­rat­ing.

The ab­duc­tors are most likely fol­low­ers of Abu Sayyaf sub-com­man­der Al­habsy Misaya, an­other se­cu­rity of­fi­cial said on con­di­tion of anonymity.

“Pagka ganyan, si Al­habsy ‘yan kasi sila ‘yung may mata­gal nang plano,” the of­fi­cial said, adding that Misaya’s group usu­ally brings cap­tives to In­danan or Parang towns.

Four armed men had ab­ducted-Malaysian cou­ple Thien Nyuk Fun and Bernard Ghen Ted Fen at the Ocean King Res­tau­rant in San­dakan, Sabah, around 8 p.m. Thurs­day.

The four were re­port­edly armed with two M16 ri­fles and two cal­iber.45 pis­tols, and used a speed­boat.

Thurs­day’s ab­duc­tion oc­curred just a week af­ter Misaya’s group snatched a busi­ness­woman in Si­asi, Sulu, on May 6.

Five of Misaya’s men, how­ever, were killed as rel­a­tives of busi­ness­woman Guan Kim Mau­jon and armed barangay watch­men traded shots with the boat-rid­ing ab­duc­tors.

Mau­jon was found alive the next day, float­ing in wa­ters be­tween Parang and Ta­pul Is­land.
