Nursing home aide arrested in So. California, suspected of ID theft

DALY CITY, California — A Filipino assistant in nursing home in Glendora, Southern California, was arrested for allegedly stealing identification information from two elderly patients and using them for fraudulent online purchases.

Maui Berganio, 29, of West Covina, was arrested on February 26 for allegedly stealing debit card and account information from two of his patients at Kindred Transitional Care and using them without authorization for personal online transactions, according to a report by the .

One of Berganio’s patients, an elderly woman aged 80, reported him to authorities January 8 after she woke to find him kneeling by her bedside.

Glendora police detective Zach Houser said Berganio took the woman’s debit card information and used it in numerous online transactions “totaling over $8,000.”

Berganio used the debit card information to buy furniture, tennis shoes and automobile parts, among other things, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune reported.

Berganio has previously worked in other Southern California care facilities including at Arbor Glen Care Center, Doctors Hospital, West Haven Healthcare Center, Citrus Valley Health Partners – Queen of the Valley Campus and Sierra View Care Center.
