Lonely Planet: PH one of best places for ‘extreme eating’

MANILA, Philippines—The Philippines was chosen by an international travel guide as one of the “World’s Best Places for Extreme Eating.”

The Philippines’ “balut” was recognized by the Lonely Planet as one of the top 10 weirdest foodstuff.

Lonely Planet said the “Filipino delicacy of fertilized egg is better tasted than seen.”

“It is usually served as a street food, boiled in the shell and served with salt, spices and vinegar. Crack the top of the shell and sip out the liquid broth before tackling the meat and yolk,” it said.

It said the country has “one of the world’s most beautiful coastlines, fringed by dive-tastic coral reefs, sprinkled with sunbathe-ready white sand, backed by swaying palm trees and dotted with simple resorts of nipa palm thatched huts.”
