9 Fil-Am orgs get $100k grant for ‘Yolanda’ rehab projects

MANILA, Philippines—Nine Filipino-American organizations were awarded $100,000 each to implement projects to help the rehabilitation of areas struck by supertyphoon “Yolanda” (international name: Haiyan).
In an awarding ceremony held in the Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C Tuesday, the Philippine Humanitarian Coalition gave the grants to the following organizations for post-”Yolanda” rehabilitation and recovery efforts:
- University of the Philippines Medical Alumni Society of America (UPMASA), to rebuild Hilantagaan Elementary School in Sta. Fe, Bantayan Island, Cebu
- Philippine Medical Association of Metro DC (PMAMDC), to repair and renovate the San Sebastian Covered Court;
- Filipino Family Fund, to finance PREDA Foundation aimed at protecting children;
- Answering the City of the Poor (ANCOP), for its Palo rebuilding project and butterfly homes;
- World Bank Group-IMF Filipino Staff Association (WBIFA), for land preparation and establishment of contour farming as livelihood recovery and rebuilding for small farmers in Matag-ob town in Leyte;
- Migrant Heritage Commission Inc., to rebuild Visayas with vibrant ecology, fund medical mission and Iskolar ng Bayan scholarship fund drive;
- Philippine Nurses Association of Metropolitan DC Inc., to support orphans for the prevention of human trafficking;
- Philippine Association of Metropolitan Washington Engineers (PAMWE) and Feed the Hungry (FtH), to construct schoolhouses and evacuation centers; and
- Philippine Nurses Association of America Foundation (PNAAF), to reduce maternal and infant mortality in “Yolanda”-devastated areas in Samar.
The funds for the grants awarded to the said organizations were from the proceeds of “After the Storm”, a benefit concert held last June 15.
The Philippine Humanitarian Coalition was created through the concerted effort of Filipino-Americans aimed at organizing fund-raising activities for the recovery of areas hit by “Yolanda”.
