The wastewater coming from one of the pipes of the sewage treatment plant of the airport on Naia Road continued to overflow and spill into the road through the afternoon.

The burst sewer line was within smelling distance of the Airport Casino Filipino of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) and well within the sniffing range of the security checkpoint area of Terminal 1 and its parking lot.

Airport employees said some guards stationed at the checkpoint were seen covering their noses while checking passing vehicles.

In a phone interview, Dante Basanta, manager of Terminal 1, said the situation was being dealt with by the airport’s engineering team.

“We would just like to clarify that Terminal 1 did not stink, as the pipes were far away from the airport building,” Basanta said.

He noted that arriving and departing passengers at Terminal 1 were not affected by the overflowed sewer line.

“It happens at times. It overflows when it is clogged. Even ordinary homes experience this thing,” he said.
