Abductors, Filipino, Malaysian victims likely headed to Sulu–DFA

MANILA, Philippines—Three armed gunmen who kidnapped a Malaysian and a Filipino from Sabah are believed to be heading to Jolo in the province of Sulu, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Tuesday.

“Our police attaché in Kuala Lumpur received confirmation from the Royal Malaysian Police that a Malaysian and a Filipino were kidnapped by three masked gunmen in Kunak, Sabah, last June 16,” DFA spokesman Charles Jose said in a press conference.

“Malaysian police believe that the kidnappers intend to bring the two victims to Jolo, Sulu,” he said.

The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) police have been alerted about the incident and Malaysian and Philippine authorities have been coordinating their efforts to find the kidnap victims and their captors, Jose said.

The Malaysian, identified as Chan Sai Chiun, was said to be a fish farmer, while the Filipino employee was identified as ‘Maslan.’

“We have no information yet on the identities of the abductors,” Jose said.
