MANILA, Philippines鈥擲panish officials in Manila on Thursday assured the public that a number of Filipinos detained for alleged drug trafficking in Spain would be accorded their legal rights as they face charges in court.

In a briefing Thursday, Spanish Ambassador to the Philippines Jorge Domecq said the Filipinos arrested in drug raids in Barcelona, Madrid and Murcia earlier this week would receive due process.

鈥淭here are Spanish citizens also detained. They will have due process, the same as the Spanish citizens. No problem with that,鈥 said Domecq in a briefing at his residence yesterday.

Spanish authorities said Tuesday they arrested 43 persons鈥20 Filipinos, 19 Spaniards and three Africans鈥攆or allegedly smuggling crystal meth or 鈥渟habu鈥 into Spain using a car import-export company as a front.

Domecq said the syndicate used 鈥渢he cover of a ghost company for the import and export of cars, bringing shabu into the country and distributing it.鈥

He said the group included 鈥渟mall drug dealers鈥 and those 鈥渨ho control the market.鈥 He did not give further details because the case was in court.

鈥淥f course, you can count on all of them (detained Filipinos) being granted access to the consular staff of the Philippine Embassy in Madrid as soon as they request to. That will be granted for sure,鈥 said Ignacio P茅rez Cambra, deputy chief of mission at the Spanish Embassy.鈥Tarra Quismundo
